Facility Maintenance Technician I

The Facilities Maintenance Technician I position is responsible for maintaining the City of Chesapeake’s, Public Utilities Maintenance & Operations Division’s buildings, structures, fixtures, and equipment.
As a Facilities Maintenance Technician I you will be required to perform minor installations, modifications, maintenance, and repair of facilities operated by the Public Utilities Department including but not limited to the following: carpentry, landscaping, mechanical, plumbing, painting, masonry, metalworking, light roofing with minimal direction/supervision.
This position will also require the ability to complete logs, forms, reports, and follow specific directions or procedures given by the responsible supervisor.
Typical tasks include:
· Maintaining City-owned property in the vicinity of each facility to include landscaping/pruning services.
· Maintaining City owned property and equipment such as vehicles, trailers, power tools, and landscaping equipment.
· Inspecting or monitoring the condition of buildings, structures, fixtures, equipment, and outside structures for needed maintenance or repairs.
· Working with Facilities Coordinator to initiate installation, modification, construction, maintenance, or repair actions in response to inspections or work orders.
· Estimating materials and determining tools, support equipment, or other requirements needed to complete the job; secures needed items and transports to job sites.
· Performing indoor maintenance including painting, carpentry, plumbing, or mechanical repairs within each facility.
· Performing outdoor maintenance including landscaping, concrete work, painting, roofing repairs/replacement, minor structure repair, and other similar tasks.
· Assisting other divisions with maintenance tasks.
· Maintaining job-related forms such as logs, activity reports, material reports, and other required reports as assigned.
· Performing other related duties as assigned.

· Posting data or information.
· Giving information, guidance, or assistance to personnel to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.
· Communicating with citizens and the general public on matters related to the maintenance of City-operated structures and buildings.
· Handling or using machines, tools, or equipment that require brief instruction or experience such as hand and power tools or equipment, landscaping equipment, measuring equipment, vehicles, telephone systems, or other similar equipment.
· Reading routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures, or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar.
· Performing clerical, manual, and technical tasks using standard practices which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgment with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.
· Guiding others, making frequent decisions, affecting the individual, coworkers, and others that depend on the service or product.
