Systems Engineer II (Endpoint Engineer)

The City of Chesapeake’s Department of Information Technology Enterprise Operations Team is searching for an IT Systems Engineer with a specialty in Endpoint Engineering. The Systems Engineering Team Endpoint Engineer is responsible for supporting, managing, and planning for the City’s endpoint management systems and virtual desktop infrastructure. This position will also be exposed to all other services provided by the Systems Engineering Team. The IT Systems Engineer will be a resident POC/SME for endpoint management systems and virtual desktop infrastructure efforts as efforts progress from the conceptual phase through the implementation phase while also supporting current operations. This position supports the coordination of and delivery of IT endpoint management and operational support services to include application packaging, operational issues, provisioning, requests for new endpoint services, and improvements in IT workflow processes.

The Systems Engineer II will join a team of engineers who all work to integrate best practices and innovative solutions within endpoint management, data center infrastructure and cloud computing. The Systems Engineering Team is responsible for projects, operational support, troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrades, and expansion of the City’s foundational computer and public/private cloud infrastructure. Project responsibilities include coordination, documentation, detailed implementation/migration planning, meeting timelines, and coordinating vendor installations. This position reports to the Systems Engineering Team Lead and will work closely with both the Systems Engineering Team and other teams within the IT department.

Candidates must possess good interpersonal, customer support, verbal and technical writing skills; be a self-starter with the ability to achieve deadline-driven priorities. Candidates must have the ability to collaborate and work in a team environment, exhibit professional initiative and self-direction, the willingness and ability to document knowledge than share that knowledge with others is required. Strong communication skills and creativity as a problem solver is a must. Must have a passion for new technologies, motivation, time management skills, and attention to detail.

Candidate should have experience in the following areas:

  • Manage and administration of endpoint management systems (e.g., Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, SCCM, Intune, etc.), ensuring proper configuration, deployment, and monitoring of endpoint devices across the organization.
  • Solid understanding of endpoint security principles, patch management, and compliance standards.
  • Supporting Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android in an enterprise environment.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automation and administrative tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.

CJIS/PREA Disclaimer: This position will provide direct support to the City’s Public Safety departments and will have physical access to public safety buildings and/or access to confidential and sensitive public safety databases. As such, and in compliance with federal regulations and guidelines, City of Chesapeake IT staff and contractors must receive a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) and may require a Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) criminal background clearance prior to employment and annually thereafter while employed or under contract with the City of Chesapeake. Automatic disqualifiers related to the CJIS and PREA criminal background checks apply, including but not limited to, US Citizenship and/or minimum ten (10) years US Residency requirements.
