Reports to: QC Manager and Lab Supervisor
Shift: Day
Pay: $20/hour

Summary:
The Quality Control Specialist, under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, works toward assuring the quality of products made at the plant. This position conducts laboratory tests to ensure products meet specifications (i.e., ASTM, AASHTO). To determine their quality, perform chemical and/or physical tests on cement, clinker, raw materials, and fuels. Complies with all applicable safety and environmental policies and procedures. All employees at the Leamington plant are responsible for working safely. Employees are fully expected to engage in our See Stop Do culture, following all safety procedures, proactively stopping the job, and reporting unsafe conditions, hazards, or concerns.
What you’ll be contributing:

Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
- Understands, evaluates, and monitors hazards in the laboratory or the plant.
- Performs regularly scheduled sampling and analyses as established by the laboratory.
- Monitors and changes process/quality parameters (i.e., separator speed, weigh feeder settings, etc.) to keep raw meal, kiln feed, clinker, and cement within the aims established by the Quality Manager.
- Notifies the Shift Supervisor of any out-of-specification samples or problems.
- Maintains a high level of communication between the production and quality departments.
- Assists the production department in emergencies, as needed.
- Maintains a clean work area and assists in other housekeeping responsibilities.
- Performs breaks on cement cubes on day shifts on weekends and holidays.
- Prepares samples as needed for chemical and physical testing.
- Operates, cross-checks, and performs minor repairs to laboratory equipment.
- Maintains laboratory inventory of chemical solutions.
- Maintains logs and quality analysis reports as specified.

To succeed in this position, you will need:

High school graduation or equivalent is required.

Associates or Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field is preferred

1 year of experience performing relevant tests in a cement laboratory environment is preferred

Ability to read, write and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.

Willingness to learn, training will be provided.
- Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills.
- Understands warning labels, instructions, and signs.
- Knowledge of the cement manufacturing process, including kiln-burning, mill grinding, cement, clinker, and raw mix chemistry.
- Knowledge of chemical testing, including wet chemical analysis, x-ray analysis, and physical testing procedures.
- Ability to develop and follow comprehensive technical directions.
- Ability to operate all laboratory equipment, including balances, x-ray, muffle furnace, physical testing equipment, and laboratory computer.
- Skills needed include mathematical, analytical, organization, and communication skills, proper time management, and handling working under pressure.
What to expect in a cement environment:
Work to be performed in a shop environment as well as outdoor exposure throughout the plant. Mild exposure to cement dust, heat, cold, and noise requires compliance with specified safety guidelines and procedures. Exposure to high elevations of up to 250 feet in height. Exposure to all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.
