We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Automotive Technician Supervisor to lead our team of automotive technicians responsible for the repair and maintenance of light vehicles and small equipment. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maximizing fleet utilization and preventing operational delays in customer departments.
Class A CDL training is provided by the city at no cost to employees. The twenty-hour mandatory behind the wheel time is conducted while on the clock…get paid to train! Vehicles for DMV road testing is also provided.
This role requires a combination of technical knowledge related to vehicle maintenance, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to manage people and resources effectively to ensure the smooth operation of a vehicle fleet.

Duties include but are not limited to:
- Fleet Management: Oversee the maintenance and repair of light vehicles and small equipment to ensure they are in optimal condition, minimizing downtime and operational disruptions.
- Supervise Technicians: Manage a team of automotive technicians, providing guidance, support, and training as needed to ensure high-quality repair and maintenance services.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure that all repairs and maintenance work is completed to high-quality standards and in compliance with safety regulations.
- Scheduling and Work Allocation: Efficiently allocate work tasks to technicians, prioritize jobs, and establish schedules to meet customer department needs.
- Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that shop personnel adhere to safety standards, City of Chesapeake regulations, Central Fleet Management (CFM) policies, and environmental laws. This involves maintaining a safe working environment, promoting a culture of safety among team members and ensuring that the maintenance processes comply with relevant regulations.
- Cost Assessment: Assess costly repairs for older vehicles and provide recommendations to the Superintendent on whether to dispose of or repair them. This decision should be based on repair history, vehicle usage, and budget constraints.
- Work Order Management: Review work orders for accuracy and completeness. Update equipment statuses in fleet maintenance software throughout the day to maintain an accurate record of vehicle maintenance and repair activities.
- Leave and Overtime Management: Manage leave and overtime requests for shop personnel based on operational needs and the workload in the shop. Review and approve employee timecards to ensure accurate payroll processing.
- Technician Performance Evaluation: Evaluate technician performance, identify training needs, and track required certifications. This helps in maintaining a skilled workforce and ensuring that technicians are up-to-date with the necessary qualifications.
- Training and Development: Identify training needs within the team and provide coaching and development opportunities to improve skills and knowledge. Provide training to technicians on proper maintenance procedures and diagnostic processes. Assist with complex repairs and ensure the team is equipped to handle various maintenance tasks.
- Data Management: Create and maintain spreadsheets, tracking logs, and follow established processes to enhance workflow efficiency and improve the quality of data. This involves record-keeping and data analysis to support decision-making.
- Vendor Coordination: Monitor the repair progress of vehicles at vendors, ensuring timely return to service. Review estimates, issue purchase order numbers, and handle invoice processing for payment. This involves managing external repair services efficiently.
- Customer Communication: Coordinate with departmental liaisons to understand their needs and priorities. Then, schedule projects accordingly, which may involve planning vehicle maintenance and repair activities to align with the organization's operational goals. Communicate effectively with customers, respond to emails in a timely manner, and proactively follow up to address their concerns and inquiries. Maintaining good customer relations is essential.
