We are actively seeking an experienced safety champion to join our team as a Complex Safety Manager in Chesapeake, VA. The Complex Safety Manager will provide leadership and support to develop and administer an effective and proactive program to eliminate loss events in the workplace. This role will ensure compliance with applicable Perdue, local, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations. The incumbent will serve as part of the Perdue AgriBusiness Operations team with additional operations responsibilities as needed.

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advise, support, and promote an effective Safety and Security Management Process
  • Maintain an awareness of regulatory issues and industry best practices and ensure compliance with internal policy/procedures and external regulatory requirements
  • Manage Perdue AgriBusinesss Security programs.  Create reports and maintain documentation as needed.  Programs to include:
    • Alarm notification systems at PAB facilities.  Determine what systems are in place, if they are being maintained properly, and audit performance annually
    • Emergency Response training annually at all PAB facilities to include active shooter, bomb threat, workplace violence, and weather evacuation.  Audit to confirm postings of evacuation routes and contact information at PAB facilities annually
  • ​​​​​​​Plan, develop, track and conduct safety training sessions
    • ​​​​​​​Develop and maintain daily tool box talks with hyperlinks to appropriate material and post in calendar format in Velocity
    • Coordinate the activity of special emphasis actions (e.g. Safety Committee, Behavioral Based Safety Steering teams, etc.
  • ​​​​​​​Conduct facility inspections, incident investigations and safety audits as required.  Follow-up to ensure completion of action items and gap closure.
  • Lead and assist in the development of goals, strategies and tactics to accomplish safety plans. Communicate the status of safety performance against identified goals and standards to Regional Management teams
  • Assist engineering and facility personnel with contractor safety management including the contractor selection process, contractor training, and observation of compliance activities. Assist contractor with incident investigations and third-party claims as needed
  • Perform annual security audits; report findings and assist with recommendations for corrective actions including items such as cameras, hand held radios, keys, services, vertical lighting, fencing, etc.

Minimum Education

  • BS Degree (Safety, Agriculture, Management, Business, Engineering)
  • Professional Safety Certification preferred

Experience Requirements

  • 5 - 7 years of related experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Understanding of agricultural production operations
  • Requires strong leadership skills and the ability to deal effectively with an hourly workforce, technical personnel, regulatory agencies, and senior management
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Highly developed planning and organization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with government/regulatory agencies effectively
  • Detailed knowledge of health and safety regulations issued by OSHA, Workers Compensation, and other governmental agencies 

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

Able to move freely throughout the AgriBusiness facilities to include climbing vertical heights (0 - 150'), exposure to extreme temperatures (0-100 Degrees Fahrenheit), humidity, (0 - 100%), noise (50db to 100db – hearing protection required) and chemicals (MSDS sheets available).   Required to travel to remote AgriBusiness facilities and customer locations.  Able to use standard office equipment and communicate on the telephone.
