Summary

 

Under general supervision and according to established policies and practices, performs general labor responsibilities around the plant including clean-up and assistance when needed in other departments.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs clean-up and housekeeping of plant and plant grounds.
  • Assists in removing and installing refractory lining in the kiln, pre-heater tower, cooler, and other related plant equipment.  Also assists with concrete pours, and mixing and pouring monolithic refractory, which may require lifting sacks weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Performs cleaning of plant equipment including the following:  unplugging chutes and silo feeders; cleaning the inside of dust collectors and tower cyclones using water and air hoses; and unplugging pre-heater tower vessels. Feed pipes, conveyor drags, augers, belt conveyors and troughing rolls.
  • Assist in unloading materials.
  • Cleans railroad hopper and box cars, which includes lifting top loading doors weighing up to 125 pounds.
  • Handles all chemicals for cement grinding and moves materials and equipment to job site.
  • Cleans roofs, drainage ditches, and storm drains.  Digs out and assist with repairs to underground air, water and gas lines.
  • Removes, screens and reloads ball charges in grinding mills.
  • Digs and maintains cement storage silos.
  • Operates all mobile equipment necessary to complete job tasks.
  • Performs relief work as needed.
  • Assists maintenance personnel and other classifications, as appropriate.
  • Must have the ability to understand and utilize the Cardox system if needed and trained.
  • Responsible for housekeeping and clean-up of immediate work areas or in other areas in conjunction with assigned duties.
  • Responsible for documentation associated with job duties.
  • As required assists in major plant repair projects.
  • Observe all safety rules and keeps work areas and equipment clean and orderly.
  • Observes all safety rules, wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and keeps work areas and equipment clean and orderly.

 

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to read and understand warning labels, instructions, signs and similar information.  Must understand and successfully pass all appropriate RCRA hazardous material training and tests.  Must successfully complete on-the-job training provided by designated supervision or otherwise qualified individuals.

Ability to safely and effectively use a shovel, pick, broom, scoop, hand tools, scraper, sledgehammer, wheelbarrow, air lance, water hose, skid steer loader, dump truck, lawn mower, tractor, forklift, backhoe, pavement breaker, air drill, chain saw, spike driver, air compressor and all job related mobile equipment.

Work requires walking; lifting up to 125 pounds; bending; pushing; pulling; climbing ladders and stairs; working at elevated heights; and working in confined spaces, silos, tanks and drain manholes.

 

Working Conditions

May be exposed to dust, noise, heat, high elevations and all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.

 

What to expect in a cement environment

 

Work to be performed in a shop environment as well as outdoor exposure throughout the plant. Exposure to cement dust, heat, cold, and noise requires compliance with specified safety guidelines and procedures. Exposure to high elevations of up to 250 feet in height. Exposure to all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.
