The Virginia Department of Social Services is seeking an experienced, passionate human services professional to lead a moderate size social services department located in beautiful Sussex County, Virginia.
Sussex County has a long and rich history. It was established in 1754 from Surry County and named after Sussex County, England. The settlement of Sussex County started prior to 1700 when people began to move south of the Blackwater River. This community, which encompasses 496 square miles, lies in the Coastal Plain region on a level to slightly rolling terrain and home to approximately 12,500 residents. The County is 45 miles southeast of the capital city Richmond, 25 miles from the tri-cities area that includes Petersburg and Hopewell. Washington D.C. and Baltimore are within a few hour’s drive, while Boston and Atlanta are both within a day’s drive.
A six (6) member Board of Supervisors, elected by districts to four (4) year terms, with a Tie Breaker elected at large to a four (4) year term, as well, governs the County. Sussex County is home to four (4) incorporated towns: Jarratt, Stony Creek, Wakefield, and Waverly. Each town has its own governing body. The County, however, provides many essential services to the town residents. The Department of Social Services is a level II agency, with approximately 35 staff. Serving a community with a poverty rate that exceeds the state average, this Director II position is an opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of children and families!
The DSS Director leads and manages the Social Services Department to ensure program compliance for a wide variety of mandated and non-mandated federal, state, and local programs. It is responsible for all social services, human resources, and financial program management. It establishes the goals and objectives of the local department and administers all social services benefits and service programs. In addition to providing leadership and management for agency programs, the Director serves as the agency spokesperson with the public and liaison with the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) and the Virginia League of Social Service Executives (VLSSE), recommending policy and legislation changes. The Director interacts frequently with and makes presentations to community partners. The Director works closely with the Local Board of Social Services and County management, making short and long-term agency decisions based on data, trends, directives, and findings.
